As the Aussie summer heats up and backyard barbecues beckon, Swimply, the “Airbnb for pools,” is encouraging homeowners to turn their underutilised pools into income-generating assets.
With demand for pool access soaring across the country, Swimply highlights this as the ideal moment for homeowners to list their pools, offering Aussies affordable, local escapes while also earning extra income.
The platform provides a cool solution to rising temperatures and cost-of-living pressures, turning backyards into income-generating spaces while bringing people together for a refreshing escape. It’s a win for homeowners and families looking to relax and enjoy affordable getaways.
The origin story behind Swimply serves as a testament to its innovative beginnings.
The idea emerged when founder Bunim Laskin, growing up as the eldest of 12 children in New Jersey, sought a creative escape from the challenges of a bustling family home.
Without a backyard pool of his own, he approached his neighbour proposing an arrangement where his family contributed to the pool’s operating costs in exchange for occasional use.
This simple idea evolved when the neighbour began opening the pool to others, turning it into a profitable resource and planting the seed for Swimply’s future success.
Today, Swimply has expanded to include more than 20,000 backyard experiences globally, with over hundreds growing across Australia alone.
The platform has also extended its offerings beyond pools, incorporating tennis and pickleball courts, and creating even more ways for Aussies to earn from their underutilised spaces.
Swimply allows users to search for pools and courts based on proximity, budget, and features such as pet-friendliness, barbecues, waterslides, and suitability for events like milestone celebrations and photoshoots.
Hosts retain full control over their listings, setting their own rules of engagement to ensure a personalised experience for guests.
Swimply Sydney host Sandy Read has transformed her generational family pool from a cherished gathering spot for her parents and their grandchildren into a shared oasis for the community.
Sandy said, now that the grandchildren have grown, renting the pool through Swimply allows her to earn extra income while giving others the chance to enjoy the space and create their own special memories.
Swimply CEO Derek Callow said Australia was a priority market for expansion in 2025, with more than 2.7 million homes featuring private pools ready to be transformed into income-generating assets.
“Swimply’s mission is simple: to take what’s already there and make it work harder – for Hosts and for Guests,” Callow said.
“With hire fees starting at just $15 per hour and averaging $40 per hour, Aussies can earn $5,000 per month simply by renting out their pools to their community.”
Homeowners can sign up to host in minutes, while Guests can find their perfect pool or court at swimply.au or on the Swimply app.
