After nine creator partnerships, 11 Queensland regions and more than 7.4 million video views, Aruga’s Claudia, Eliza and Chelsea compare notes on what makes a great creator partnership, on and off the feed.
Spend enough time working with content creators and you quickly learn that the magic of a great partnership rarely comes down to follower count alone.
We were reminded of that recently while delivering the That Holiday Feeling Starts Here famil program with Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ).
Our brief was to help turn Queensland’s winter advantage into immediate travel inspiration as part of TEQ’s broader marketing campaign. We developed 11 distinct takes on the perfect mid-year reset, one for each of Queensland’s tourism regions, then set about finding the right storytellers to bring them to life.
That meant matching influencers to everything from an Outback Queensland road trip and a Whitsundays luxury escape to island time in Townsville, food and fresh air in Queensland Country and a wild reset around Mackay. Each itinerary was designed as an achievable short break, packed with experiences people could see themselves booking.
Across nine creator partnerships, the campaign generated more than 7.4 million video views. Even better, TEQ’s post-campaign research found 69% of people who saw the content were likely to visit Queensland within the next six months, a conversion rate 20% higher than broader campaign activity.
So, the content worked.
What interested us when we sat down afterwards, however, was why some partnerships worked particularly well.
A few months spent deep in the DMs, contracts, itineraries, content approvals and analytics left us with a few observations about the partnerships that really clicked.
The numbers only tell you so much
Reach and engagement matter. So does knowing who sits behind them.
One of the smallest creators engaged for the TEQ campaign had fewer than 14,000 Instagram followers. Combined with boosting, their content generated 95,000 views, more than 2,800 engagements and 605 saves. Another, with 34,000 followers, generated 474,000 views and more than 1,000 saves.
We also worked with creators with audiences in the hundreds of thousands who delivered enormous reach. Each had a different role to play.
For us, selection starts with the place, the story and the audience. Outback Queensland called for creators who would relish a road trip and everything that comes with an intrepid adventure exploring the region. A Whitsundays luxury escape needed a different fit.
Follower count gives you scale. The real question is whether people trust what that creator has to say.
The brief is a starting point
As an agency, we bring the strategy, objectives, key messages and a pretty intimate understanding of what our client needs. Creators know their audiences better than we ever could.
One creator on the TEQ campaign sent us two versions of a video, explained the thinking behind each edit and told us which she thought would perform better.
We loved that.
She understood the brief while bringing her own expertise to it. That’s the sweet spot: clear brand guardrails, a shared objective and enough creative freedom for creators to do what we engaged them to do.
If everything came back looking and sounding exactly as we imagined it, we’d probably be missing half the value of the partnership.
Plans change. Great partnerships roll with them.
Anyone who has delivered a famil knows there are a lot of moving parts. Even the most meticulously planned itinerary will evolve as new opportunities emerge, and plans shift along the way.
On one trip, a creator had a final opportunity to capture an iconic Queensland experience on the morning she was due to fly home. She was up for a 7am scenic flight before heading to the airport for her 11am departure.
The content was worth the early alarm.
The creators who stood out across the campaign were happy to roll with the realities of travel. They trusted us, we trusted them and everyone stayed focused on getting the most from the experience.
Flexibility won’t appear in the campaign metrics but the people managing the partnership certainly remember it.
You can tell when someone is genuinely into it
Our nine creators produced 101 pieces of content beyond their contracted deliverables, from additional feed posts to TikToks and Stories. One shared around 30 additional Instagram Stories during her trip.
We don’t see that as an expectation. Creators should be fairly paid for the work we ask them to produce, with deliverables, usage and remuneration clear from the outset.
What those 101 pieces showed us was genuine enthusiasm.
We deliberately left Stories uncontracted, giving creators room to share the moments they wanted to share organically and in real time.
The result felt exactly as it should: people having a brilliant time in Queensland and wanting to bring their audiences along.
The relationship behind the Reel matters
There is plenty happening before a Reel appears in your feed: negotiations, contracts, travel arrangements, itineraries, approvals, feedback and quite a few emails nobody on Instagram will ever see.
Some of our favourite collaborators were responsive, thoughtful and clear about what they needed. They understood the brief without needing every detail explained, brought ideas to the table and took changes in their stride.
Sometimes the response really was as simple as: “No worries. What are we doing instead?”
Dreamy.
A great working relationship doesn’t mean agreeing on everything. We want creators to protect their audience, their work and their value, and to bring a point of view to the table.
That responsibility runs both ways. Our job is to provide a clear brief, realistic timelines, fair commercial arrangements, quick feedback and enough freedom for the finished content to still sound like the person we hired.
The best partnerships have a second act
By the end of the campaign, we knew far more than how each creator performed.
We knew who understood the TEQ brand instinctively. Who had a knack for making useful, saveable travel content. Who could spot a stronger edit. Who thrived on a road trip. Who could take a brief and run with it. And who we’d be excited to pick up the phone to again.
There’s real value in that knowledge.
As creator marketing matures, long-term relationships can build familiarity, trust and genuine advocacy while making each new collaboration easier and stronger.
The best partnerships leave everyone wanting another round: the brand gets what it needs, the creator makes something they’re proud of and the audience gets something worth watching, saving or sharing.
And when the next opportunity lands, everyone is happy to get the group chat going again.
